Here are the few most common dental emergencies and ways to how to handle those.
1. Knocked Out Tooth:
If you have knocked-out an adult (permanent) tooth somehow. we may be able to put it back. If the tooth is put back in place within 20 minutes, it has a fair chance of survival. Any delay of more than 2 hours makes the survival of the tooth hard.
Here is what you need to know for” Knocked out Tooth”
Be very careful in handling the tooth. DO NOT HOLD THE TOOTH BY ITS CROWN.
It the tooth looks dirty and has debris on the surface, gently rinse it with water. DO NOT SCRUB THE SURFACE OR TRY TO REMOVE ANY ATTACHED TISSUE FRAGMENTS.
Try gently placing it in the socket or store it in a cup of warm milk. Give your dentist or the nearest possible dentist a call as soon as possible. Time is a critical factor in determining the survival of the knocked out tooth
2. A Chipped Tooth
It is the most commonly seen dental emergency. Chipped teeth can result from just biting into hard foods or some sort of accidental injury to the teeth. Most people are embarrassed to walk around with a broken front tooth. The good news is that it is really easy to fix this by doing bonding, Porcelain Veneer or a crown depending upon the extent of damage. It may or may not need root canal. Call your dentist to get an evaluation done.
3. A Broken Tooth
Usually a broken tooth is a bit more severe than a chipped tooth. It may break due to hidden cracks or decay in the teeth. It may cause extreme discomfort and pain. If it is causing swelling, place cold compresses on you cheek. Do warm salt water rinses.
4. Something Dislodged between the Teeth:
Sometimes you may get a piece of food or a broken tooth fragment stuck in between the teeth. Try gently flossing it out. Do not poke the area with pins or something sharp as it may damage your tooth structure or gums. Call your dentist to get the dental help. Sometimes, the dislodged pieces can cause swelling of the gums. Take Advil or any anti-inflammatory drug (provided you are not advised against the anti-inflammatory drugs) and do frequent salt water rinses.
5. Lost Filling or a crown
Losing a filling or a crown can happen for a variety of different reasons. In certain cases, there is no pain after a lost filling or a crown. However, the remaining tooth structure is not as strong and it is prone to further damage. Make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible. If the crown is missing for a while, the adjacent teeth shift into its place making the existing crown impossible to fit again.
Here is what you need to know to do in case of a lost filling or a crown:
Sometimes exposed tooth structure is very sensitive to air, touch and temperature. You can dab some clove oil on Q-tip to the exposed area. The clove oil has pain numbing capacity and it is available in the drug stores
In case of a broken filling, you can use a piece of a sugar free gum to cover that area
If the crown comes off, you can clean it under running water, try putting it back on. If it still fits well, try using some denture adhesive or petroleum jelly to temporarily glue it back on. Don’t eat on that side and see your dentist as soon as possible
6. Severe Trauma to Lips or Tongue
It can cause severe bleeding at times. Use a clean piece of cloth to apply pressure to the area of the mouth that is injured and bleeding. If there is swelling on the lip, place an ice pack.Go to nearest ER as soon as possible.
7. Abscess
Abscess is the infection that forms either around the root of the tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. It is a serious dental condition that does needs prompt treatment.
Abscess can cause damage to teeth, gums and surrounded jaw bone. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other body parts causing a life-endangering problem. You should try getting in touch with your dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, try doing frequent warm salt water rinses (1/2 teaspoon of table salt in a cup of warm water). This will cause the abscess to drain and relieve some of the pain.
